SEAHAWKS MANIA!!!!!!!!!
OK, so if you live on this planet you know that the Seahawks are going to the Superbowl. This is a very exciting time for all Seahawks fans, as this is the first time the Seahawks have gone to The Superbowl. Now, anyone who knows me is probably surprised I even know that much :). I am happy for the Seahawks, I love seeing anyone's hard work pay off. Although, I am not a big football fan myself. The highlight of the game for me last Sunday was Carrie Underwood singing the National Anthem (she did a great job by the way, my husband approved) :o).
So, I have been watching people get SO excited over the Seahawks...like crazy excited..as if they are actually on the team themselves. I don't quite understand this phenomenon (I know I'm in the minority here...but it's MY blog! hehehe). So I have been thinking about it and I have a theory...let me know what you think...but, remember I have the power to delete your comment!! JK! :o)
First let me just say, I don't think there is ANYTHING wrong with being a sports fan! I have had my own moments with the Mariners..so, I am not saying there is anything wrong with it. Here's my theory......
I think everyone has a deep desire to be a part of something bigger then themselves, I think God placed that desire in us. He created us that way, so that hopefully that desire would draw us into relationship with Him and into living out the purpose for which we were created, therefore being connected with something much bigger than ourselves. But, clearly we know many people don't connect to their purpose, so they have to find other ways to fill that void. I think being a sports fan is one way people do that. Now, I am mostly talking about the die-hards. You know the people who wear the t-shirt, the team hat, have the bumper sticker, the team license plate, and revolve their entire lives around the teams games. :) I saw this guy come into the gym the other day, he had a Seahawks sweatshirt, a seahawks hat, a seahawks bag, he had the seahawks license plate on his car, and a bumper sticker...so he helped me with my analogy. :) Can I tell you how much I wanted to walk up to him and ask him if he was a Seahawks fan? :) I refrained, don't worry. I think those people want to feel a part of something big, and they find a sense of identity in being a fan of a certain team. It's like they are telling the world, "I am a Seahawks fan, this is who I am". I just find it odd. I am sure the Seahawks players are thrilled to be going to the Superbowl and to see all their hard work and effort pay off. But, sometimes I wonder if they look at some of those die-hard fans and think to themselves.."Dude, even your're more excited about it than I am, it is just a part of my life, I'm not sure I'd even be here if I wasn't making millions and your revolving your whole world around this." OK, so maybe they don't think quite like that...but that's what I imagine they would think. Maybe it would be something more simple, like "Man, I'm on the team and even I'm not THAT into it." But, I would think they have to at least think it's a little odd. So, am I way off here? :) Why do I feel like I'm really in for it on this one. :)
Last thought..why is it that people have no problem hollering, shouting, jumping, and clapping for their favorite sports team but when they are in church and singing about the fact that they are forgiven, that they are free, that they are loved, that the price of sin has already been paid for them, that they have been given the gift of eternity, that there is a great plan and purpose for their life do so many just stand there with hands in their pockets with no emotion or expression of joy? I so wish Sunday mornings could be more like a football game.
Well, minus the beer, peanut shells, and men with painted chests. :)

I'm talking about my Honey too here! :) I'm NOT, I repeat NOT saying there is ANYTHING wrong with being a sports nut! In my atempt to understand it however, I just came up with this theory. What do I know anyways!? :)

OH MY GOSH! Somehow I don't think Tammie wrote that! :) That made me laugh out loud. I have so many responses to that, but I just can't put them on here! :0)

Jess,
Fans jump, scream, do crazy things at games because that is the norm so there is no comparison needed. In church we tend to judge those that jump and scream during praise and worship.

I am shocked that John approved of Carrie Underwood singing. I sat and watched her sing and thought to myself "I wonder if John is watching and what he thinks of her singing?". That is so weird that I immediately wondered what John thought of her.

Well, Carrie Underwood didn't blow John out of the water or anything, he just liked that she didn't mess with the song. She sang it straight and pure, and thats how he thinks the national anthem should be sung. So, he liked that. She was a little weak on the high note, but he was like "Shoot, if that was me having to sing there, I would have thrown up!" :o)

Jess- you are right on in your analogy concerning sports vs. us as Christians. You could fill in the blank with anything besides sports, including those obsessed with working within a church. We do all have a burning desire to be a part of something....thats why kids get so mixed up with gangs or being "an individual" when they really are not. For some of us it might hurt to hear us identify more with a sports team then being on the Almighty's Team, but it is a good way to open people's eyes to what they are putting their faith, heart & soul into. Sports teams, especially our mighty Seahawks, have really shown us to to be a team & to rally our state. So on that note, Go Seahawks!! MKD

Oh Jess - You crack me up! I understand your analogy, but your talking about men here! For my John, it's way too deep. All I can think of is likening it to Wynonna, for you. Imagine that she came to Seattle and wanted you to be a part of her whole trip - sight-seeing, singing, etc. You would be in heaven - dream come true. John's mom has pictures of John in Seahawks attire from when he was 7-8 years old. He has cheered for this team since he was little, waiting (patiently) for them even to be good, let alone go to the Super Bowl. I think it's just a life-time dream come true for some of these guys. Their favorite team being 1 of the best in the Nation. I love watching John and my boys share in all of the excitement!

Holly, I was waiting for someone to use the "Wynonna" analogy. :) Here's the thing... I really wasn't talking about any of our husbands....I mean I don't really understand the depth of their passion for a sport or a team and may never...but that wasn't my main point. I was talking about people who it's their life...and that they find their identity in associating with a certain team. It's their source of joy. Like they are literally a part of that team. I know your husband, I know he's a sports nut, but I also know that is not "who he is"...ya know? That is what I was speaking to, I was afraid some people might miss my point on this one because I was mentioning the Seahawks :). I was really just simply recognizing everyone's God given need to be a part of something bigger then themselves.

GO SEAHAWKS!
